LATEST BABSON WRFC NEWS

Babson College vs. Amherst College
Saturday, April 2nd -

Babson kicked off their spring season on April 2nd out at Amherst College in western Massachusetts.  Both teams lacked numbers and elected to play 10-a-side rugby in this friendly.  The morning rain made the ball difficult to handle for both sides, with turnovers and sloppy play dominating the early portions of the match, however these errors faded away as the game progressed.

It was apparent from the beginning that both teams were very evenly matched, with long runs from individuals on each side.  4 rookies played the entire game for Babson, including a new hooker who was able to steal several balls against the head, despite only hooking for less than a week in practice.  The other rookies provided hard running (including several long breakaways - one that went 98-meters for a try) and solid work on offensive rucks to keep the ball in hand for the majority of the test.  The Babson veterans provided stable leadership and led by example all game.

Final score after 2 halves was Babson 17, Amherst 5.  Two additional frames were played with the score unrecorded, during which Amherst was successful in breaking the defensive line of Babson twice for long tries.  Work is still needed to prove this club is ready for the rest of the spring, but the potential is evident.

Babson plays at Home vs. WPI next weekend (4/9).  Kickoff is slated for 1pm.

Framingham State vs. Babson College
Saturday, October 24th -

League leader Framingham State traveled to Babson this weekend having already locked up one of the two Conference playoff berths and looking for a tune up leading into the post season.  Babson's roster was down to 9 players due to injury and conflicting schedules, so an extended game of 7's was played.  With the referee a no-show, Babson's coach was pushed into officiating duties.

Framingham got the scoring started early on a long break by their winger and never looked back.  Constant pressure by their defensive line kept Babson on the back foot, and complacency around the breakdown allowed FSU to steal several possessions.  The second and third periods were stronger for Babson, with strong runs by several rookies and veterans alike.  The final score was not recorded, but was approximately 8 tries to 1, in favor of Framingham.

Babson wraps up it's Fall 2015 season with a record of 0-5, but with a positive outlook for the Spring and beyond.  Over 10 rookies played significant minutes for the club this fall, and with another season of recruiting Babson is poised to take another big step forward in 2016!

MIT vs. Babson College
Saturday, October 17th -

This weekend's game was a match-up with our friends over at MIT.  With only 6 players making the trip from Cambridge, a 7's scrimmage was determined to be the best option.  Hard running and good support kept the ball in hand for most of the game, with the score tied 5-5 after 14 minutes.  In the interest of getting everyone more experience, a third period of 7's was played, in which MIT exploited Babson's perimeter defense, leading to 3 tries for the visitors.  Final score was 20-5.

Next weekend Babson wraps up it's season vs. Framingham State.  11:00am kickoff at Harrington field.

Babson College vs. Brandeis University
Sunday, October 11th -

Sunday was a beautiful day for rugby on the soccer turf at Brandeis University.  Low numbers from both sides resulted in a 7's scrimmage, with three 7-minute halves being played in the 70-degree weather.

Babson's hard running was the highlight of the day, although sloppy defensive structure led to several long runs down the sidelines for Brandeis.  Babson fought hard, scoring a try within the last few minutes of the final period to bring the score to 15-10, but time expired before the comeback could be completed.

5 rookies played significant minutes in the game, with 2 participating in their first rugby match ever!  With continued recruitment and support, Babson's young side will be poised to take a big step forward in the coming seasons!

Babson College vs. Mount Holyoke
Saturday, October 3rd -

Babson traveled to western Massachusetts on Saturday to play Mount Holyoke.  Due to low numbers from Babson, the official game was recorded as a forfeit, but thanks to subs from MoHo, Babson was able to field a side of 15 players and scrimmage the full 80 minutes.

Strong individual efforts in all phases of play kept the game competitive throughout, although lapses in defensive structure led to multiple break away tries from Mount Holyoke.  Turnover ball from set pieces were the highlight of the day from Babson as their pack and line out produced multiple take-aways despite limited cohesive practice time.

Next SUNDAY (October 11th), Babson makes the short trip up to Waltham to play at Brandeis.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm, and directions can be found HERE.

University of New Haven vs. Babson College
Saturday, September 26th -

This weekend Babson hosted NEWCRC newcomer University of New Haven.  From the opening kickoff it was clear that UNH was the superior side - constant line breaks and turnover ball led to an early scoring discrepancy and prevented Babson from gaining any momentum.  UNH put on a display of skills in all facets of the game, with balanced scoring throughout, leading to a final score of New Haven 82 - Babson 0.

Despite the point differential, Babson's spirits remained high, with 7 rookies playing significant minutes.  With such a young team there are bound to be bumps in the road, and this week certainly was an indication that there is work to be done.

Next Saturday (October 3rd), Babson travels to Mount Holyoke to play their second game of the season.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm, and directions can be found HERE.

Babson College vs. Wellesley College
Saturday, September 19th -

Babson traveled across town to scrimmage Wellesley as a combined side with MIT.  No less than 6 Babson rookies participated in their first rugby action ever, many logging a full 80-minutes!

The game was a hard fought battle, with hard running from both squads.  Rookie mistakes with ball control (to be expected) led to quite a bit of turnover ball from both Babson and Wellesley, but overall it was a positive experience for both sides.

The final score was Babson/MIT 22 vs. Wellesley 17.

Good luck to both MIT and Wellesley in their coming seasons!
