Babson hosted WPI for their sole home game of the spring season this weekend. Due to low numbers, the two teams elected to play 11-a-side rugby (10's, plus an 8-man) which allowed each team sufficient players for substitutions. Four 20-minute periods were decided, and the game kicked off at 1pm.
The Beavers started the scoring early, breaking WPI's defense for some long runs by the centers and wings, leading to three tries and three successful conversions. WPI was able to fight back with a long scoring run of their own as the first frame ended 21-5.
The second and third periods found Babson struggling to maintain possession as WPI flooded the breakdowns with their forwards, leading to turnover ball. Shifty runs by WPI's fly half, combined with timely offloads allowed the visitors to mount a significant comeback, with the score 21-17 going into the final period.
In the fourth, Babson and WPI traded tries and with the score 26-22 both teams dug deep knowing the game was on the line. As the clock ran down, Babson held possession inside the opposition 22-meter line for nearly 5 minutes, but WPI's defense held strong and eventually were able to clear the ball and steal a lineout near midfield. With under a minute to go, WPI made a break down the near wing, but a clutch covering tackle by the Babson backs just inside the 22 saved a sure score. When the tackled WPI player mistakenly played the ball while on the ground, the penalty secured the win for Babson.
Final score: Babson 26, WPI 22
Next weekend, Babson travels down to Newport to play in the Beast of the East tournament. Saturday's games kick off at 8:30am and 4:00pm. Directions for spectators can be found HERE.
