Babson’s fall season concluded this weekend on a rainy Saturday against Brandeis College. Both teams were low on numbers, so a 60-minute game of 10’s rugby was elected to be played in the interest of getting all players additional experience.
The Beavers started the scoring quickly and never looked back, touching down their first try only 2-minutes into the game and averaging a try scored every 4 minutes for the duration of the match, winning 82-0. Babson’s forward pack was dominant on the day, crashing through Brandeis’ defensive line and drawing additional defenders in. This provided the backs loads of space out wide, allowing 4 different backs to score tries - the forwards put in the hard work, and the backs got most of the glory.
Defensively Babson was ruthless in the rain. Hard hits cause Brandeis to knock the ball on, and smart play around the breakdown resulted in dozens of turnover balls. This prevented Brandeis from gaining any momentum and Babson was able to maintain possession for minutes at a time. However, Brandeis never gave up until the final whistle, and showed admirable resolve and great sportsmanship despite the lopsided score.
Babson ended their season on a high note, outscoring their final two opponents 120-5 over their last 140-minutes of rugby. Final record was 1-0 in full 15’s games, 0-1 in forfeited matches, and 1-1 in short-handed scrimmages. Things are looking up going into the off-season, and the club is excited for what is sure to be a great Spring full of rugby!
